Family Violence Project has an ongoing need for volunteer advocates to help answer our 24-Hour Helpline for those affected by domestic violence. As a volunteer advocate on the helpline, you will make a difference in people’s lives by volunteering once a month from the comfort of your home. Do you worry that you won’t know what to say? Family Violence Project offers a free training that prepares you for this volunteer role; also, a staff person will always be available to assist you by phone while you are volunteering. Participants in the training will learn about the complex issue of domestic violence, the staff and services of Family Violence Project, and how to talk with callers and help them create safety plans. Although successful completion of our training is required for this volunteer role, no other experience is necessary.
Family Violence Project’s next volunteer training will be held in Waterville Tuesday and Thursday evenings starting September 18th. If you are interested in participating in this training and volunteer opportunity, you must be 18 years of age or older, complete a volunteer interview, and pass background / reference checks prior to being accepted into the training. Volunteer interviews must be completed by the end of the business day on Tuesday, September 11th. While the training itself is free of charge, we ask for a $25 donation from those who are financially able to provide it; this will help cover the cost of background checks. The inability to make a donation will not prevent a person from participating in this opportunity!

Join the American Lung Association for the 35th annual Trek Across Maine on Father's Day Weekend - June 14 – 16th, 2019. Featuring a new route for our 35th Anniversary, cycle 180 miles across the state of Maine, with the starting and finishing line hosted at the Brunswick Landing and overnight stops at Bates College in Lewiston and Colby College in Waterville. This ride is fully supported by volunteers and trained medical staff, including support vehicles along the route and three rest stops daily.
-2 day option for those of you that can’t get away for a 3 day vacation! Join us Saturday and Sunday and enjoy the Trek experience!
-1 Day option for those that want to just experience a taste of the Trek Across Maine! Join us on Sunday for the last leg of the ride starting at Colby College!

On Thursday, September 20th, we will be 'Celebrating Resilience' at O'Brien's Event Center at the Best Western in Waterville. This year's celebration recognizes the hard work and dedication of some past and present pregnant or parenting teens to complete their high school education and become successful parents.
Past and present teen parents will share their stories of the Sharon Abrams' Teen Parent School Program and we will also have a number of silent auction items to bid on and support our fundraising! This year's Keynote Speaker is Dr. Rafael Grossmann, Trauma/General Surgeon and Health Technology Innovator. In his address, "Mixed Reality & Beyond: The Smart Use of Technology Without Limits!" Dr. Grossmann will explore current trends and the future of the smart application of Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and Mixed Reality technologies in healthcare and education. Dr. Grossmann was the first surgeon to pioneer the use of Google Glass during live surgery, and is an ardent telemedicine, global health, and digital medicine advocate.
The event features 15 workshops and demonstrations across 5 tracks: Cloud, IT Career Development, IT Infrastructure, Security, and “Tech Sandbox” (hands on technology demonstrations) on topics such as redesigning a campus-wide network, using DevOps in chaotic situations, Microsoft Azure migrations and deployments, cost effective security techniques, Maine’s neutral internet exchange, security threat hunting, IT certification and education programs, and more. Most workshops will be led or co-led by “end-user” IT professionals at Maine-based organizations; sectors represented include retail, education, biotechnology, government services, and manufacturing.

Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry (DACF), Maine Department of Labor (MDOL), and Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC), invite the public to celebrate the vitality of Maine's agricultural industry at the first Agricultural Labor Field Day on Thursday, May 3, 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Alfond Recreational Center, KVCC Hinckley Campus, 16 Prescott Dr., Hinckley, ME. The event is open to the public and free to attend.
The Agricultural Labor Field Day connects those interested in professional and academic agricultural careers with local jobs and/or KVCC's undergraduate programming in a variety of agriculture fields, including Sustainable Agriculture, Culinary Arts, and Business Administration. Workforce training and professional development staff from KVCC and MDOL will be on-site to review resumes and offer job searching advice. Attendees can also take a tour of KVCC’s 120-acre farm which demonstrates organic crop production and sustainable livestock.

The Sexual Assault Crisis and Support Center will be hosting their 18th Annual Celebrity Dinner on September 16th from 5:30 to 10pm at the Augusta Civic Center and are excited to announce the event has moved to the Main Auditorium! SAC&SC anticipates as many as 350 guests and local Celebrities to attend this premier fundraiser in support of the survivors they assist every day.
This year’s theme is “Hawaiian Luau” and festivities will include a Limbo Challenge, Hula Hoop Contest, Celebrity Waiter Performances and much more. Thomas College will be hosting an 'Entrepreneur Speaker Series'. It's an initiative to showcase the entrepreneurial talent within Central Maine, as well as provide the necessary insight and networking opportunities for inspiring entrepreneurs.

As big of a deal as hunting is in Maine, many folks in the public have never really been told just how important it is to jobs, wages and the tax base. That has begun to change with the efforts of Hunting Works for Maine, a collation of businesses and organizations formed in 2015 to educate the public about the value of hunting.
Using a grassroots strategy to spread the word, Hunting Works for Maine has already grown to more than 100 members in just eighteen months! While members include business associations including the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce, it also includes tourism associations and other businesses such as hotels, restaurants and many others.

The Children's Discovery Museum now offers a licensed Nursery School!
The mission of the Children’s Discovery Nursery School is to provide a safe, enriching, service-based Nursery School for families in the Kennebec Valley area. Located directly inside The Children's Discovery Museum, the school seeks to provide an array of exhibits and activities that promote developmental skills including social, cognitive, problem solving and peer interaction. The environment aims to create an interactive community in which hands on learning is provided through play.
Children ages 2 years 9 months to age 5 may be considered for admission. The enrollment process includes submitting all admission forms as well as completing the Payment Agreement.
Our first session will start January 4th, 2016 and run through May 27th 2016. All sessions last five months. The Nursery School day begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 11:00am, running Monday through Friday. Each day will include indoor and outdoor play, facilitated learning opportunities, circle time and snack.

Maine Staffing Group's Augusta office has been growing. MSG is pleased to announce the promotion of Janie Miller to Human Resources and Compliance Manager. Janie has been performing these duties for over 12 years for us on an as-needed basis along with providing HR consulting services to our client-companies. On Saturday, September 19, 2015 the Sexual Assault Crisis & Support Center (SAC & SC) hosted their 16th Annual Celebrity Dinner event, which was their most successful fund raising and awareness event to date by collecting over $47,000.00. The SAC & SC agency is in its 28th year of providing services to individuals impacted by sexual violence within Kennebec & Somerset Counties in Maine. The theme for this year’s event was “Masquerade Ball”, which was an evening of great elegance dedicated to honoring the many masks that survivors of sexual violence may wear, in their everyday lives, to find their new sense of “normal” as well as to bring awareness to the stigmas that sexual violence victims face while finding their journey of healing. This time of year brings much change to our environment. The leaves change color; sportsmen get ready for hunting season; and shorts and sandals get replaced with sweaters and boots. It is also a critical time of year for Maine’s older population. The Medicare Open Enrollment Period is from October 15th through to December 7thand Spectrum Generations is here to help older adults of central Maine stay informed and answer their questions about Medicare, Medicare Advantage, and MaineCare, Medigap and other programs and benefits that supplement Medicare.
Each year Medicare health and drug plans can make changes to things like premium cost, coverage and which providers and pharmacies are in their networks. People in a Medicare health or prescription drug plan should always review the materials their plans send them, like the “Evidence of Coverage” (EOC) and “Annual Notice of Change” (ANOC) and if their plans are changing, they should make sure their plans will still meet their needs for 2016.

The Kennebec Performing Arts Company is pleased to announce that we are welcoming new musicians for our 2015-2016 season. This is an exciting opportunity to join an organization with a long history of making music in the greater Augusta area. Under the direction of Charles T. Milazzo, our three ensembles – an auditioned 4-part chorus, a large wind ensemble, and a jazz band - perform in at least two concert series each year. Our musicians are your incredibly talented neighbors and fellow community members – everyone from students to music teachers; from working professionals to the retired young-at-heart.
We are seeking both vocalists and instrumentalists. The ability to read music is required. Our chorus rehearses Monday nights from 6:30-8:30, at the Hope Baptist Church in Manchester – first rehearsal is Monday, September 14. Our Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble rehearse in several area high schools on Tuesday nights from 5:45-7:00 and 7:00-8:30, respectively. First rehearsal is at Cony High School on Tuesday, September 1.

Dustin was hired at Delta Ambulance in 2011 as an advanced EMT and became a Paramedic in 2012. Since then Dustin has earned his Critical Care Paramedic certification from the University of Maryland. He is a member of Delta’s Clinical Standards and Practice Team, a Field Training Officer and an EMS Continuing Education Instructor. Dustin and his wife Lisa live in Sidney, Maine with their two daughters Ariana and Braylee. They enjoy all outdoor events and riding motorcycles.
Congrats to New Quality Manager
Congratulations to Chip Getchell who has recently accepted a full-time position as quality (improvement) manager at Delta Ambulance. Chip was hired as a paramedic by Delta Ambulance in 2001, and received his critical care paramedic certification after attending the University of Maryland in 2010. He is a member of Delta’s Clinical Standards and Practices Team, a field training officer, and teaches monthly classes for area first responders. Chip has been awarded Delta’s Clinical Performance Excellence Award for ten of his fourteen years with Delta. A registered professional engineer in Maine, Chip and his wife Beth have three grown children and five grandchildren. They reside in Weeks Mills with their horses and ponies, including two rescues.
