Gardiner Teen Snowboard

The toughest race for an elite athlete is the race for funding. Unlike millions of athletes in other countries, the careers of potential Olympic athletes in the U.S. are not financially supported by the government. This leaves the athlete responsible for all expenses. This past season, West Gardiner resident Devryn Alley competed in 15 international events in the Snowboardcross discipline. Devryn's top three athletic performances include: 5th place at the U.S. Jr. World Cup two man team race in Yabuli, China; 4th place finish at the 2015 USASA Nationals held at Copper Mountain, Colorado, USA;  3rd place finish at the National Jr. Championships in Big White, British Columbia, Canada.

Expenses for these events include: race and coaching fees, travel costs (air, hotel, food,) training, equipment (cost and maintenance), housing on the training mountain, etc. Last season, the costs totaled $25,957. This season's costs are projected to be $35,784.

To aid Devryn with upcoming costs for the 2015-16 season, "TEAM DEV" will be holding the Silent Auction/Spaghetti Dinner and Ice Cream Social (sponsored by Deb's Ice Cream of Randolph) Fundraiser on October 3 at the Gardiner/Augusta Lions Club in Gardiner. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12 and under. For more information and advance tickets contact Anne Valley at 582-2244.
