The year 2014 has been a busy and productive one for your Chamber. While pursuing, promoting and assisting in the economic development of projects such as new business and retail establishments and continuing to facilitate expansion of a natural gas source for the region, we have continued our member services with more than 50 specific member events throughout the year.
(AUGUSTA) Maine Attorney General Janet T. Mills is warning Maine businesses to be aware of a phone scam that claims to be from the Maine Office of Tourism. The callers claim to be selling advertising in a publication of the Maine Office of Tourism and then demand an upfront, cash payment be paid over the phone immediately. These calls are not from the Maine Office of Tourism or any of their sub-contractors and do not appear to be legitimate.
We have learned of a new phishing scam in which taxpayers receive emails purporting to be from the Taxpayer Advocate Service (and bearing our logo). The email contains a bogus case number and says:

State Launches New Web Portal - Aimed at Cutting Red Tape
Maine's economic development agency has launched a new Web portal aimed at cutting red tape for new businesses registering with the state.
The Maine Department of Economic and Community Development on Wednesday announced the upgrade, which DECD Commissioner George Gervais said is the first in a series of changes to the state's "Business Answers" Web portal.

We’ve lamented the loss in the past few decades of our labor intensive factories that produced huge quantities of paper, shoes and textiles. And, yet, we’ve seen a positive transition in the city with the advent of more service industries, large and growing distributors and a flourishing growth of retail trade which now serves a market nearly 20 times the size of Augusta’s population.
