Fort Western Living History Museum & National Historic Landmark invites children of all ages interested in local history and museum stewardship to register for one of our Summer Youth Programs: Apprenticeship Program (ages 8-12) or the Jr. Interpreter Program (ages 13 and up). These one-week sessions start Monday, August 5 and continue through Friday, August 30.

The Apprenticeship Program will explore daily life at home in the 18th century, the varied world of work (blacksmithing, midwifery and storekeeping), the life of a French & Indian War Soldier and what children and adults did for entertainment. Graduates are eligible to participate in the Jr. Interpreter Program. Jr. Interpreters will assist with the Apprenticeship Program; learn about collections management and how to interpret the history of the Fort, develop necessary skills to demonstrate 18th century hands-on activities to the public, and how to conduct research through reading and deciphering original documents.

Reservation forms can be obtained on line at or at Fort Western Administrative Office located in Augusta City Center, 16 Cony Street. Space is limited, so please register as soon as possible to insure you get the desired week. Payment must be received in full by 4:00 p.m. Friday the week prior to the registered program session. On behalf of management, staff and the Board of Directors of New Dimensions Federal Credit Union (NDFCU), they would like to thank the participants, businesses, and community for their continued support of the Cruisin’ For A Cure Car Show. Additionally, they are excited to announce that this year’s event raised $11,741.55 for the cancer program. With an additional $5,000 award from the Children’s Miracle Network, the new total raised is $16,741.55. Each year the proceeds from the car show benefit the Maine Children’s Cancer Program (MCCP), an affiliate of The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center, and is located in Scarborough, Maine. A special thanks to the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals for the match award.

This year’s event was the biggest event yet with a record-breaking 160 participants who entered their cars into one of the 24 car classes offered. We had DJ, Mike Davis playing music from the 70s, 80s, and 90s, the Flamingo Café food table sported lengthy lines all day, and the trophies were accepted with giant smiles and pride one-by-one.

New Dimensions FCU feels truly blessed to have such outstanding and involved community members, local business owners, and, of course, car enthusiasts who proudly showcase their beautiful cars each year. A heartfelt thanks to all of you!

In honor of TAM’s 50th Season, Cumston Area Quilters have created a beautiful, handmade quilt to be raffled off as part of TAM’s 50th Anniversary Celebration. Raffle tickets are $10 for one; $25 for three. The raffle will continue through TAM’s 2019 What Dreams May Come Summer Repertory Season and the winner will be drawn at the final performance of Sense and Sensibility on September 22.

create the celebratory quilt for Theater at Monmouth. The Pride & Purpose Quilt was designed by Kaye England, machine pieced from fabric designed by Wilmington Prints and machine-quilted by Dee Roberge. In addition to the quilt itself, which measures 80” by 93”, the winner will receive two shams and a quilted carry-case.

TAM celebrates 50 years of producing Classic Theatre in Maine in 2019. The What Dreams May Come Season is bursting with works to make you laugh, cry, gasp, ponder, and experience a sense of wonder. Through classic Shakespearean thrillers, contemporary romances, and classic comedies, TAM’s Golden Anniversary with sparkle and shimmer all season long.

“We were totally overwhelmed by the support of the Cumston Area Quilters,” said Producing Artistic Director, Dawn McAndrews. “The time and commitment they put into creating this beautiful work of art was awe-inspiring. I’d like to win it myself but I bet there is a patron out there who has come to nearly every play for 50 years—and they deserve the right to win it!” Members of the Cumston Area Quilters agree and have said they plan to purchase raffle tickets to win the quilt themselves.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Theater at Monmouth Box Office before and during intermission for all performances of the 2019 Season. The winning ticket will be drawn from the stage after the final performance of Sense and Sensibility (it seemed appropriate given the name of the quilt) on September 22. AUGUSTA, ME  – July 9, 2019 –MaineGeneral Medical Center has launched a new service aimed at improving care in its Emergency Departments. MaineGeneral is in the process of bringing on medical scribes to document patient visits while medical staff care for patients.

“The emergency department is a fast-paced environment focused on diagnosing and treating urgent patient conditions,” explained Laurel Parker, MD, Medical Director, Emergency Services. “Scribes work with our medical and nursing staff, especially during times of high volume, to record important patient care information in real time. They help locate past medical records, prior lab/radiology results, or past visit histories for the provider to review. They can also help medical staff contact other specialists and facilitate hospital admissions as needed. This gives medical staff more time to focus on the patients’ needs.”

Parker added that by decreasing time spent documenting, medical staff can see more patients and therefore decrease patient wait times, which is one of MaineGeneral’s ongoing goals.  

MaineGeneral plans to employ a total of 30 medical scribes from the local area to join the Emergency Departments in both Augusta and Waterville. Sixteen have been hired thus far and are already working with medical and nursing staff, who are happy with the early results. “I am so pleased I can give my full, personal attention to my patients,” Parker said. “I also feel like I am providing better care because I don’t have to spend time on the computer in between visits.”

ScribeAmerica is handling recruitment and paid training of medical scribes, the nation's most frequently used medical scribe company with more than 15,000 employees across the U.S. providing professional services for more than 3,000 clients. Part-time positions, with potential for full-time, are available in Augusta and Waterville for local applicants with weekday and weekend daytime availability. Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED, as well as computer and typing skills; a college degree or current enrollment in a health-related program and familiarity with medical knowledge are preferred.

Waterville Creates!, a non-profit supporting and promoting high-quality, accessible arts and cultural programs and institutions in Waterville, Maine, announces a gift in the amount of $25,000 from Golden Pond Wealth Management in support of the community capital campaign for the Paul J. Schupf Art Center.

Designed to bring together under one roof some of Waterville’s most beloved arts institutions, including the Maine Film Center, Common Street Arts, and a new gallery of the Colby Museum of Art, the Paul J. Kennebec Behavioral Health (KBH) held its 59th Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 13th at the Senator Inn in Augusta.  The event included recognitions of area community partners for exceptional community service and partnership.

Matt Brown was presented with the 2019 James R. Schmidt Award, which is presented annual to a person or organization that best exemplifies the late Jim Schmidt’s efforts to improve quality of life for adults who experience mental illness by providing them with social, education and employment opportunities. Mr. Brown has been working in some capacity of law enforcement since 1989. For the past year, he has been the coordinator of informal support systems for Law Enforcement Officers struggling with alcohol, substance abuse, and/or mental health issues. He has been an integral part of connecting Clubhouses to the broader community, including partnering Clubhouses with advisory board members, establishing employment opportunities, and promoting law enforcement relationships with the Clubhouses.

The Outstanding Community Partnership Award was awarded to Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) for the organization’s enduring support in our shared efforts to increase access to evidence-based addiction care for Maine citizens living with opioid use disorder.  Through their Expanding Addiction Care Initiative, MeHAF provided invaluable support for KBH Outpatient Services and Redington Fairview General Hospital’s Primary Care to take the first steps in increasing access to the critically needed service of Medication Assisted Therapy.

Since 2012, Family Violence has mentored and collaborated with KBH to provide treatment which meets the unique strengths and needs of the women they serve. Through this partnership of domestic violence shelter services and mental health and/or substance use disorder treatment services, Family Violence and KBH staff paved the way to a promising practice for women seeking safety, recovery and a new life.

A highlight of the evening was Kennebec Behavioral Health’s keynote speaker, Gordon Smith - Director of Opioid Response for the Office of Governor Janet T. Mills.  A Maine native, Mr. Smith has served as Chair of the Maine Health Data Organization and of the Executive committee of the Advocacy Resource Center of the American Medical Association. He is also a former Chair of the Board of Quality Counts, a regional quality improvement collaborative and a former board member of the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging. He is a current board member of the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership. Mr. Smith shared his vision for the Opioid Response efforts in the State of Maine and underscored the importance of prevention, intervention and treatment for substance use disorder.

Bar Harbor Bankshares (NYSE American: BHB or the “Company”) announced that its banking subsidiary, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust (“BHBT” or the “Bank”), has signed a definitive agreement to acquire eight branches located in central Maine with approximately $287 million of deposits, $111 million of loans and $284 million of assets under management (as of March 31, 2019) from People’s United Bank, National Association (“People’s”).       

Both banks will be working closely to ensure a seamless transition for customer accounts and associates transferring to BHBT.  The Company intends to offer continued employment to the professionals associated with People’s central Maine region, which is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2019.  This acquisition is subject to regulatory approval from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the State of Maine and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.  The eight branches will increase BHBT’s total branch count to 56 in its footprint, and 22 in the State of Maine.  The Company is well positioned to integrate the new branches into its existing operations and deliver the product depth and local responsiveness that it has become known for.

AUGUSTA, ME  – June 24, 2019 –MaineGeneral Health is one of three health systems in the U.S. to be named 2019 Patient Financing Top Performers by patient financing service provider ClearBalance® in conjunction with the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA).

The ClearBalance zero-interest financing program helps patients pay their health care bills over time. MaineGeneral began using the ClearBalance program in 2018 and is being recognized for Top Performer – Greatest Impact to Patients. In seven months, the ClearBalance program helped patients manage their medical costs for nearly 16,000 hospital visits. During that same time, an average 290 patients per month used the ClearBalance program to manage their costs for additional services at MaineGeneral Health, either for themselves, their spouse or dependents.

“We don’t want cost to be a barrier to receiving needed care. With ClearBalance, patients know they have a financing option so they aren’t as likely to delay care. Giving patients an option to pay their out-of-pocket costs over time definitely impacts satisfaction and loyalty,” said Buffy Higgins, senior director, Revenue Cycle. “It’s been a positive experience for our patients, including our own employees who need extended financing to pay their portion of care. It’s the right thing to do.”

In 2018, 92 percent of patients offered the ClearBalance program agreed to use it, Higgins added. Local SERVPRO cleanup and restoration specialist offers tips to Augusta area homeowners for a sizzling and safe summer grilling season

Augusta, ME (Grassroots Newswire) June 18, 2019 -- According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), July is the peak month for grilling fires, followed by June, May, and August.1 Annually, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 10,200 home fires each year involving grills, hibachis, or barbeques. With the summer season fast approaching, Anthony Wolverton of SERVPRO® of Augusta/Waterville, a fire and water damage cleanup specialist in the Augusta area, urges homeowners to check the readiness of their outdoor cooking equipment – like grills and propane tanks – to help ensure summer cooking fires don’t become house fires.

“The NFPA reports that seven out of every 10 adults in the U.S. has a grill or a smoker,” said Wolverton. “That statistic really highlights the risk that homeowners face of experiencing a home fire caused by grilling and other open flame cooking. It’s important to take some basic safety steps to help ensure you’ll spend your summer enjoying friends and family and not dealing with the aftermath of a grill-related house fire.”

According to the NFPA, the top three causes of grilling fires are failure to clean the grill, leaks in gas hose lines or breaks in the grill body itself, and proximity to flammable objects. Wolverton says these risks are easily managed and offers the following tips2 from the NFPA to help Augusta area residents prepare and use their outdoor grills:

General Grill Safety
1. Check your grill for cleanliness and damage. Remove grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill before the first use and after each subsequent use.
2. Position your grill well away from your home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging tree branches
3. Keep children and pets at a safe distance – at least three feet from the grill
4. Never leave the grill unattended when in use, and always grill outside.

Propane Grills
1. Check for leaks in the gas tank hose before using your grill.
2. Open gas grill top before lighting the grill.
3. If the flame goes out, turn the grill and gas off and wait at least five minutes before re-lighting it.

Charcoal Grills
1. Use only charcoal starter fluid or opt for a charcoal chimney or electric starter.
2. Never add charcoal starter fluid, or any flammable fluid, to the fire.
3. Dispose of coals in a metal container after the coals have cooled completely.

“It doesn’t take long to prepare your grill for safe cooking, but it can take months to recover from a fire and the resulting flame, smoke, and water damage,” said Wolverton. “Invest a few minutes now to get your outdoor cooking equipment clean and ready to go, and then spend your summer enjoying good times and great food, not dealing with the destruction and heartbreak of a house fire.”

The Kennebec Valley Tourism Council (KVTC) has awarded Sponsorship Support funds in the amount of $1,785 to the Maine Film Center for the 22nd Maine International Film Festival. This funding will assist in the growth of tourism in Maine’s Kennebec Valley and produce a positive economic impact on the region.

Maine Film Center was one of eight sponsorship recipients awarded as part of the 2019 KVTC marketing partnership program. In total, the 2019 KVTC Sponsorship Support application requests reached nearly $20,000. The organization was able to award $15,000 in local regional sponsorships to its members this year, with plans to increase funding for sponsorships in 2020 to member organizations located within Maine’s Kennebec and Somerset counties who are helping KVTC promote the Maine’s Kennebec Valley Region as a destination place within their own marketing initiatives.

“We’re honored to receive the support of the Kennebec Valley Tourism Council in support of the Maine International Film Festival,” says festival director Mike Perreault. “As the largest film event in northern New England, we’re passionate about sharing 100 films from around the world and providing audiences, who visit our area from all over, the opportunity to connect with film makers and discover new stories throughout ten exciting days in Waterville.”

This allows organizers to focus their often-limited funding on building the foundations of their programs versus stretching their resources too thin in the early stages of event and destination development.”

AUGUSTA, Maine – MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center (EEPC) has been awarded a one-year, $130,000 grant from the John T. Gorman Foundation to provide home-based parent coaching services for at-risk mothers in the Kennebec Valley.

The grant provides a unique level of support to mothers who have substance use disorder, a history of mental health diagnosis, involvement with the child welfare system or other related factors that might negatively impact parenting.

“Many parents today are struggling with mental health and substance use problems, which can seriously interfere with their ability to connect with their infant in the sensitive, nurturing, consistent way that they, in their heart of hearts, very much want to,” said
Dr. Lindsey Tweed, MD, MPH, child psychiatrist at the Edmund N. Ervin Pediatric Center.

Starting July 1, the EEPC will help up to 40 women and their infants living in Kennebec and Somerset counties. Using the modified Attachment and Biobehavorial Catch-up (ABC) model, health educators will meet with each mother in her home beginning at six months into her pregnancy.

“A primary goal of the John T. Gorman Foundation is ensuring that more Maine children get a strong start in life – which begins with helping parents become the best caregivers they can be,” said John T. Gorman Foundation President and CEO Tony Cipollone. “Nationally and in other countries, the ABC model has shown very positive results in helping at-risk mothers form deeper bonds with their infants, a key factor in a young child’s healthy development. The Foundation is proud to help MaineGeneral implement this innovative program in Maine, where we hope it will bring the same positive outcomes to mothers and their children. If it does, we also hope that it’ll become a model for other communities to emulate.”

“This model has the best evidence of any program in the world for helping parents form the bond with their infants. ABC programs have begun to spread throughout the world but none yet have been developed in New England. MaineGeneral is very excited to begin bringing this state-of-the-art program to its pregnant moms,” Tweed said.

The funds will support the training, certification and equipment for two part-time health educators, technical assistance from the developer of the program, Mary Dozier PhD, and her team at the University of Delaware and other support such as developmental toys for the infants.

Over the course of 10 exciting days, MIFF showcases 100 premier releases of American independent and international cinema, classic revivals, inspiring performances, exhibitions, and community workshops in Waterville, Maine. Waterville, Maine — Waterville Creates!, one of Maine’s leading arts and cultural organizations with a mission to promote Waterville as a vibrant destination in central Maine, is delighted to announce the fourth consecutive year of Waterville Rocks! The series of free and family-friendly outdoor concerts will feature regional acts, including Enter the Haggis, The Mallett Brothers Band, and Kat Wright in downtown Waterville’s Castonguay Square on Friday evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 PM. Along with fabulous music, the concert series will offer a beer garden by The Proper Pig selling beverages and food for adults of age to enjoy, and will also host the Stone Fox Farm Creamery Food Truck for kids of all ages. Waterville Rocks! is hosted by the Waterville Opera House and sponsored by local businesses, organizations and patrons of the arts. The series is designed to provide free cultural programming for the community and offer a new way to animate downtown Waterville.

The 2019 Waterville Rocks! free summer concert dates are set for June 28, July 5, July 26, and August 2 and will once again feature a variety of funk, rock, pop and Americana music for attendees. A website to help promote this free concert series is located at

The third concert in the Waterville Rocks! series is scheduled for Friday, July 26th and will include performances by Tinsley Ellis and Cold Engines. Enter the Haggis and Tricky Britches will perform on August 2nd for the final concert. Enter the Haggis performed at our largest Waterville Rocks! concert last season, so we just had to ask them back to play for us again for anyone who missed that incredible evening downtown. Family Violence Project has an ongoing need for volunteer advocates to help answer our 24-Hour Helpline for those affected by domestic violence. As a volunteer advocate on the helpline, you will make a difference in people’s lives by volunteering once a month from the comfort of your home. Do you worry that you won’t know what to say? Family Violence Project offers a free training that prepares you for this volunteer role; also, a staff person will always be available to assist you by phone while you are volunteering. Participants in the training will learn about the complex issue of domestic violence, the staff and services of Family Violence Project, and how to talk with callers and help them create safety plans. Although successful completion of our training is required for this volunteer role, no other experience is necessary.
