Waterville Creates!, Common Street Arts (CSA), and the Waterville Area Art Society (WAAS) announces the winners of the 2019 Maine Open Juried Art Show (MOJAS) at the CSA Gallery in downtown Waterville. Now in its 28th year, MOJAS attracts artists from across the state, representing diverse Maine communities in a variety of media. A closing reception and awards ceremony will be held at CSA on Saturday, September 7th from 3:00p.m. to 5:00p.m.
The 2019 MOJAS award winners include Oliver Solmitz, recipient of Best in Show for his artwork Untitled 2. The 2019 MOJAS selection committee consisted of arts professionals and artists with combined professional experience from the Maine Arts Commission, Colby College Museum of Art, Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation. AUGUSTA - United Way of Kennebec Valley raised a record-breaking $16,000 to support community programming at its 49th Annual Golf Scramble. Twenty-seven teams competed and 37 businesses sponsored the tournament, held August 12 at the Augusta Country Club.

Fort Western Living History Museum, Augusta, ME was the grateful recipient of a generous donation from the Society of Colonial Wars, a social, genealogical and historical organization whose members are descendants of those who assisted the Crown in a Civil or Military capacity prior to the Revolutionary War.
The Society’s representatives, Jim Blanchard and Edwin Garrett of Bar Harbor, ME visited Fort Western on July 22, 2019 to present Director/Curator, Linda Novak, with a check. The check was a grant from the Society’s national headquarters in Baltimore, MD matching the donation of the local Maine chapter earlier this year.
Blanchard said, “Old Fort Western is a wonderful and important part of our history and we are happy to support it”. Novak said, “We are very happy to receive this generous donation from the Society of Colonial Wars. This donation will help us to continue our very important work to Preserve, Protect and Interpret Fort Western for the education and enjoyment of present and all future generations”.

The Kennebec Valley YMCA and the Friends of Lithgow Library are partnering again this year on a raffle fundraiser. Friends of Lithgow Library Member, Wick Johnson, commented, “It is very rewarding to see two great organizations work together to support our community!” The money raised through the raffle will go toward the YMCA’s Strong Kids Annual Campaign and Lithgow’s Annual Campaign.

Fort Western Living History Museum & National Historic Landmark invites children of all ages interested in local history and museum stewardship to register for one of our Summer Youth Programs: Apprenticeship Program (ages 8-12) or the Jr. Interpreter Program (ages 13 and up). These one-week sessions start Monday, August 5 and continue through Friday, August 30.
The Apprenticeship Program will explore daily life at home in the 18th century, the varied world of work (blacksmithing, midwifery and storekeeping), the life of a French & Indian War Soldier and what children and adults did for entertainment. Graduates are eligible to participate in the Jr. Interpreter Program. Jr. Interpreters will assist with the Apprenticeship Program; learn about collections management and how to interpret the history of the Fort, develop necessary skills to demonstrate 18th century hands-on activities to the public, and how to conduct research through reading and deciphering original documents.

AUGUSTA, ME – July 9, 2019 –MaineGeneral Medical Center has launched a new service aimed at improving care in its Emergency Departments. MaineGeneral is in the process of bringing on medical scribes to document patient visits while medical staff care for patients.
“The emergency department is a fast-paced environment focused on diagnosing and treating urgent patient conditions,” explained Laurel Parker, MD, Medical Director, Emergency Services. “Scribes work with our medical and nursing staff, especially during times of high volume, to record important patient care information in real time. They help locate past medical records, prior lab/radiology results, or past visit histories for the provider to review. They can also help medical staff contact other specialists and facilitate hospital admissions as needed. This gives medical staff more time to focus on the patients’ needs.”
Parker added that by decreasing time spent documenting, medical staff can see more patients and therefore decrease patient wait times, which is one of MaineGeneral’s ongoing goals.
MaineGeneral plans to employ a total of 30 medical scribes from the local area to join the Emergency Departments in both Augusta and Waterville. Sixteen have been hired thus far and are already working with medical and nursing staff, who are happy with the early results. “I am so pleased I can give my full, personal attention to my patients,” Parker said. “I also feel like I am providing better care because I don’t have to spend time on the computer in between visits.”

Schupf Art Center.
Designed to bring together under one roof some of Waterville’s most beloved arts institutions, including the Maine Film Center, Common Street Arts, and a new gallery of the Colby Museum of Art, the Paul J. Schupf Art Center will be constructed on the current site of The Center building at 93 Main Street, directly adjacent to the Waterville Opera House and City Hall building and downtown’s central green space, Castonguay Square. Kennebec Behavioral Health (KBH) held its 59th Annual Meeting on Thursday, June 13th at the Senator Inn in Augusta. The event included recognitions of area community partners for exceptional community service and partnership.
Matt Brown was presented with the 2019 James R. Schmidt Award, which is presented annual to a person or organization that best exemplifies the late Jim Schmidt’s efforts to improve quality of life for adults who experience mental illness by providing them with social, education and employment opportunities. Mr. Brown has been working in some capacity of law enforcement since 1989. For the past year, he has been the coordinator of informal support systems for Law Enforcement Officers struggling with alcohol, substance abuse, and/or mental health issues. He has been an integral part of connecting Clubhouses to the broader community, including partnering Clubhouses with advisory board members, establishing employment opportunities, and promoting law enforcement relationships with the Clubhouses.
The Outstanding Community Partnership Award was awarded to Maine Health Access Foundation (MeHAF) for the organization’s enduring support in our shared efforts to increase access to evidence-based addiction care for Maine citizens living with opioid use disorder. Through their Expanding Addiction Care Initiative, MeHAF provided invaluable support for KBH Outpatient Services and Redington Fairview General Hospital’s Primary Care to take the first steps in increasing access to the critically needed service of Medication Assisted Therapy.
The Transformational Clinical Collaboration Award was awarded to the Family Violence Project for their unique and innovative partnership to provide service for women surviving domestic violence. Since 2012, Family Violence has mentored and collaborated with KBH to provide treatment which meets the unique strengths and needs of the women they serve. Through this partnership of domestic violence shelter services and mental health and/or substance use disorder treatment services, Family Violence and KBH staff paved the way to a promising practice for women seeking safety, recovery and a new life.
A highlight of the evening was Kennebec Behavioral Health’s keynote speaker, Gordon Smith - Director of Opioid Response for the Office of Governor Janet T. Mills. A Maine native, Mr. Smith has served as Chair of the Maine Health Data Organization and of the Executive committee of the Advocacy Resource Center of the American Medical Association. He is also a former Chair of the Board of Quality Counts, a regional quality improvement collaborative and a former board member of the Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging. He is a current board member of the Daniel Hanley Center for Health Leadership. Mr. Smith shared his vision for the Opioid Response efforts in the State of Maine and underscored the importance of prevention, intervention and treatment for substance use disorder.

Bar Harbor Bankshares (NYSE American: BHB or the “Company”) announced that its banking subsidiary, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust (“BHBT” or the “Bank”), has signed a definitive agreement to acquire eight branches located in central Maine with approximately $287 million of deposits, $111 million of loans and $284 million of assets under management (as of March 31, 2019) from People’s United Bank, National Association (“People’s”).
Both banks will be working closely to ensure a seamless transition for customer accounts and associates transferring to BHBT. The Company intends to offer continued employment to the professionals associated with People’s central Maine region, which is anticipated to close in the fourth quarter of 2019. This acquisition is subject to regulatory approval from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and the State of Maine and the satisfaction of customary closing conditions. The eight branches will increase BHBT’s total branch count to 56 in its footprint, and 22 in the State of Maine. The Company is well positioned to integrate the new branches into its existing operations and deliver the product depth and local responsiveness that it has become known for.

Mr. Simard stated “This transaction contributes to our financial and long term strategic goals with manageable risk based on our experienced team’s history of successful acquisitions and system integrations. We plan to use the acquired deposits to replace certain existing higher cost of borrowings which will result in an immediate accretion to earnings and will support future growth with additional core funding. Incremental earnings will allow for an estimated earn-back of tangible book value per share less than a period of five years. At closing the Company will pay a 6.3% premium on average total deposits plus a premium of 1.2 times annualized wealth management revenue and approximately $4.4 million for the fair value of premises and equipment acquired.”
