Contest open to public; prize includes $100, society membership
AUGUSTA – The Kennebec Historical Society is seeking submissions for a logo design for use primarily across digital media.
Any member of the public is welcome to submit a design. The design should be created keeping in mind that its final use is for concise and easy-to-identify brand use, representative of the KHS mission and/or history of Kennebec County. The logo needs to be usable in social media, such as for a Facebook profile image or brand icon. This logo will not replace the society’s current logo; instead, it is intended to act as a supplemental logo that maintains a connection to the current logo.

Waterville Creates! and The Yellow Tulip Project are teaming up to smash the stigma around mental illness by planting vibrant yellow tulips in community Hope Gardens at the RiverWalk at Head of Falls, Veteran’s Memorial Park, and at the Bill and Joan Alfond Main Street Commons in downtown Waterville. The Yellow Tulip Project was founded by Julia Hansen when she was just a sophomore in high school. The public is invited to participate in the planting of the Hope Gardens on Saturday, October 12. Planting will begin at the RiverWalk at 2:00 pm and finish at the Veteran’s Memorial Park. A Yellow Tulip ambassador, Abi Bloom, will lead the opening ceremony at the Veteran’s Memorial Park at 4pm, where there will be hot cocoa and cider to enjoy.
Participating organizations include Waterville High School, Kennebec Behavioral Health, Waterville Parks and Recreation, Hardy Girls/Healthy Women, The Family Enrichment Council, Maine General Hospital, Johnny’s Selected Seeds, FEDCO Bulbs, Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville Peer Support Center, the Universalist Unitarian Church, Waterville Rotary Club, Waterville Lions Club, Maine Film Center, as well as many privately-owned properties throughout Waterville.
Julia had the goal to make a space for determined youth to join together to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental illness, build communities, and spark conversations about how to decrease the suicide rate. This is done through the Hope Gardens and related programming. In May, when the tulips are in full bloom, there will be associated wellness events available for all to attend in Waterville.

William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is TAM’s Shakespeare in Maine Communities offering for 2019. Romeo & Juliet will tour for three weeks to schools and community centers across the state from October 7-25 and run for one weekend only in Cumston Hall October 11 through 13. TAM’s production is part of Shakespeare in American Communities, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. The Shakespeare in Maine Communities tour is also funded in part by a grant from the Maine Arts Commission.
Theater at Monmouth has provided literature-based education programs in schools and community centers since the Theater’s founding. Since 2005, TAM has taken the Bard on the road with Shakespeare in Maine Communities— featuring 60 to 90-minute adaptations of Shakespeare with five to eight actors. $108,000 grant provides positive self-management tools to stay healthy
The Horizon Program at MaineGeneral Medical Center (MGMC) has received a $108,000 grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help people living with HIV stay healthy with chronic health conditions.
“Modern medicine enables people with HIV to live longer lives, and HIV itself is now considered a chronic disease,” said Gillian Frisch, community program supervisor at the Horizon Program. “We’re excited to offer positive self-management classes specifically tailored to people living with HIV. This is the first of its kind program in Maine, and we’re excited to partner with the wellness experts at MaineGeneral’s Prevention & Health Living and Spectrum Generations to improve the quality of life for people living with HIV.”
The MaineGeneral project, Living a Healthy Life with HIV in Maine, adapts chronic disease management classes like type 2 diabetes, chronic pain and cardiovascular disease to people living with HIV.
The grant builds on work of MaineGeneral’s Prevention & Healthy Living and Spectrum Generations, which offer classes to people in the Kennebec Valley that provide tools to manage their chronic conditions.
“We’ll be providing health self-management behaviors specific to people living with HIV,” said Frisch. “The grant also enables us to help these individuals with transportation to such classes, removing what can be a significant barrier to access these important tools. This program has the potential to greatly improve quality of life overall for people living with HIV.”

COVID-19 is a lung infection and we are working to minimize the risk to all, especially those with a lung disease like asthma, COPD or lung cancer—who are at higher risk for more severe symptoms or complications from COVID-19. Join us in accelerating the progress we’ve already made, including a breakthrough discovery that could inform coronavirus treatment strategies and help us fund additional groundbreaking research that can help mitigate COVID-19.

Begin September 26 at the Maine State Library in Augusta
AUGUSTA A diverse slate of entertaining, educational, and free events will mark the centennial of women’s suffrage and begin on Thursday, September 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Maine State Library. That evening, Candace Kanes and Sheila McDonald will present a talk, Women’s Long Road. Kanes and McDonald are the co-curators of the Maine State Museum’s current exhibition, Women’s Long Road – 100 Years to the Vote. The illustrated talk will take a deeper look at some of the exhibit’s stories and themes.
David Richards, director of the Margaret Chase Smith Library, headlines a talk on October 3, 2019 at 5:30 p.m., also at the Maine State Library. Richards will provide insights on the trailblazing career of Margaret Chase Smith in a talk, A Woman’s Place is in the House and in the Senate: The Life and Legacy of Margaret Chase Smith.
Play Me a Story, featuring teaching artists from Portland Stage Company, will be held on Saturday, October 5 at 11:00 a.m. at the Maine State Library. The teaching artists will conduct an interactive dramatic reading and acting workshop for kids (ages 5 – 11) and their families. The workshop features books that explore how every person can make a difference in the world by standing up for their beliefs.

The Kennebec Historical Society’s Personnel Committee has picked longtime archivist Ernest L. Plummer, of Pittston, as the first recipient of the society’s newly established W. Scott Hill Service Award.
Plummer resigned this month after having volunteered in a variety of KHS positions over 16 years, including two terms as president. He and his wife, Joan, plan to move closer to his daughter’s family in Massachusetts.
A native of Buffalo, New York, and a retired industrial chemist, Plummer has upgraded and maintained the KHS collections database, enabling catalogers to embed photographs and scanned images or original written documents into the record. The improvement in quality and quantity of society holdings has effectively opened KHS files to many more researchers seeking to learn more about some aspect of Kennebec County history.
Plummer became KHS vice president in 2007 and was elected to two-year terms as president in 2009 and in 2013. Under his leadership, the society pressed forward with efforts to retire the $190,000 mortgage on its present home, the Henry Weld Fuller Jr. house in Augusta, a goal that was achieved less than four years later. He also has been the society’s executive director and treasurer, and he recruited his wife to manage the society’s membership database, which she has done for several years.
He also spent much of his time assisting researchers and fostering cooperative relationships with other historical societies in the county. He clocked several hundred volunteer hours per year for the society’s benefit. As he winds up his years of service, he is training six volunteers to carry on his work of cataloging materials in the database.
For these achievements and others, the KHS Personnel Committee selected Plummer for the Hill award, which was established this year to honor society members who have initiated or organized landmark improvements in the society’s operation, reputation or contributions to the community. The award is named for W. Scott Hill, an Augusta physician who was one of the society’s co-founders and its first president.
The 560-member Kennebec Historical Society, a private, nonprofit organization, was founded in 1891. Its mission is to collect, preserve and make available to the public historical documents and illustrations that pertain to the history of Kennebec County and its 30 municipalities. The society hosts monthly historical lectures in a variety of locations in the county.
AUGUSTA - United Way of Kennebec Valley (UWKV) launched its 2019 fundraising season with $1.16 million in committed support, the most ever pledged this early in the campaign. Twenty-six businesses reported their advance campaign success to a crowd of more than 320 people at the Campaign Kickoff on Thursday.
Steve Shuman and Elissa Shuman Emmons, from Charlie's Family of Dealerships, are co-chairing United Way's annual appeal effort. They announced a goal of raising $1.8 million by December. This marks United Way's highest campaign goal in its 64-year history.
"United Way has always been really important to our family," Elissa said. "We have stepped up our giving this year and we encourage others to do the same. The best way to do that is to show people that every dollar counts."
Steve and Elissa are charged with rallying the people of Kennebec Valley to give any amount they can to support community members that need a hand-up. Early progress indicates that United Way has raised 64 percent of its overall goal to date.
Steve and Elissa also presented the organization's 2019 campaign video, which showcased the campaign theme, "Every Dollar Counts," highlighted food insecurity in Maine and celebrated the buying power of a dollar. Together donors "Power the Dream" for a stronger, healthier Kennebec Valley by supporting 51 nonprofit programs.
"When considering the community needs we wanted to focus on this year, food insecurity was number-one," Steve said. "More than 200,000 Mainers do not have enough food on a regular basis. If one person donates $1 a week for a year, they can provide 208 meals for someone in need. We are all responsible for making this community great, and for teaching the next generation how to do the same."
Courtney Yeager, executive director of United Way, thanked attendees for serving as crucial messengers of United Way's work. "Each of you is here today because you want to be," Yeager said. "You're interested in what's going on in our community and how you can help. If you ask me what our secret weapon is this campaign season, I would say it's you--and it's always been you. You make change possible."
United Way's Community Builder Award was presented to Rob Gordon, the former executive director of UWKV, by longtime United Way supporters Charlie and Nancy Shuman. Gordon was celebrated for his 33 years of generosity and his dedication to strengthening the Greater Augusta community. The award was renamed the "Rob Gordon Community Builder Award" in his honor.
"I am very proud of the work we all do. I want to thank you for all the large, the small and the very specific ways we work together to strengthen our community," Gordon said.
During the event, Al Smith, executive director of the Augusta Food Bank, shared the importance of both cash and product donations.
"People often ask me what type of donation is better, giving money or food. I tell them 'yes' because both things are needed," Smith said. "With the money donated just this morning, I can buy 1,900 meals for someone in need."
Attendees of UWKV's Kickoff Breakfast donated 1,330 pounds of food. Upon conclusion of the event, the food was split among United Way's three partnered food pantries: Winthrop Food Pantry, Augusta Food Bank and Faith Food Pantry.

Free Admission on September 21, 2019 with a Downloadable Museum Day Ticket
The Maine State Museum in Augusta will open its doors free of charge to all Museum Day ticketholders on Saturday, September 21, 2019 as part of Smithsonian magazine’s 15th annual Museum Day, a national celebration of culture and learning. In order to be admitted for free on September 21, participants need only visit the website www.Smithsonian.com/museumday , download a free ticket for two people, and present it at the Maine State Museum. On that day, the museum will be open from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
“Our visitors often think of the Maine State Museum as a kind of mini-Smithsonian,” comments Museum Director Bernard Fishman. “This is a compliment to both institutions and makes our participation in Museum Day a good fit for the Maine State Museum. Both museums use objects from nature and culture to enhance understanding and knowledge, and convey the incredible richness and diversity of the many kinds of worlds that surround us.”
Smithsonian magazine recognizes the extraordinary power of museums, and other cultural institutions, to provide visitors with insight and inspiration. Museum Day represents a nationwide commitment to boundless curiosity and the pursuit of knowledge. Over 250,000 people downloaded tickets for last year’s event. Over 1,500 museums nationwide are expected to participate in Museum Day this year.

ROCKLAND, Maine - Kennebec Valley Community College (KVCC) is expanding its regional access to courses and full academic programs this fall at the new Mid-Coast School of Technology (MCST) in Knox County. This initiative now enables mid-coast residents to earn a certificate in health sciences starting this fall. This certificate covers the pre-requisite coursework for students who wish to continue to nursing and other allied health programs at KVCC or other colleges in the state. In addition, starting in January 2020, mid-coast residents will be able to complete certificate programs to become an emergency medical technician (EMT) or advanced emergency medical technician (AEMT) at MCST’s state-of-the-art facility that opened this week in Rockland.
Maine’s newest $25-million career and technical education center, located at 1 Main Street in Rockland, will serve high school students and adults from surrounding communities.
KVCC’s Rockland satellite location will offer the programs in a dedicated higher education suite located within the new MCST building. Such an arrangement will increase access to higher education for the populations of Knox County and the mid-coast region.
The KVCC Health Science Certificate program is funded by the Maine Community College System (MCCS) Bring College to ME program, which supports targeted certificate and degree programs in high-demand, high-wage occupations to underserved areas. For eligible students that means there will be no tuition, fees or book costs for the courses offered through the Bring College to ME program at the KVCC satellite location at MCST.
“KVCC is very excited to offer courses and programs in Knox County in dedicated space at the new MCST building. This is a great opportunity for people from the greater Rockland area to have local delivery of KVCC programs without having to travel. It’s a privilege to partner with the Mid-Coast School of Technology and leverage their outstanding new facilities. Residents of Knox County will now have an affordable, high-quality option for getting the skills they need to succeed.” KVCC President Richard Hopper said.
This fall, KVCC is offering two of the courses required for the Health Science certificate: Anatomy and Physiology I and English 101.
Students will be able to attend all classes and complete the Health Science Certificate within two years at the Rockland location. The Emergency Medical Technician certificate program, starting in spring 2020, can be completed in just one semester.
Over the coming year KVCC plans to offer additional classes in Welding and Liberal Studies.

Waterville Creates!, a non-profit supporting and promoting high-quality, accessible arts and cultural programs and institutions in Waterville, Maine, announces a gift in the amount of $25,000 from MaineGeneral Health in support of the community capital campaign for the Paul J. Schupf Art Center.
Designed to bring together under one roof some of Waterville’s most beloved arts institutions, including the Maine Film Center, Common Street Arts, and a new gallery of the Colby Museum of Art, the Paul J. Schupf Art Center will be constructed on the current site of The Center building at 93 Main Street, directly adjacent to the Waterville Opera House and City Hall building and downtown’s central green space, Castonguay Square. Waterville Creates! and Colby College are partnering on this transformative project, which will create a distinctive hub for visual arts, performing arts, arts education, and film for children and adults. In addition to enhancing Waterville’s reputation as a destination for arts and culture, this new facility will add vitality to downtown Waterville during both the daytime and evening hours and serve as an economic driver for the region.

According to the Business Contributions to the Arts: 2018 Edition, a study by The Conference Board in conjunction with Americans for the Arts, 79% of companies believe arts help to improve quality of life in the community. The Arts & Economic Prosperity 5 study, published by Americans for the Arts in 2017, found that Waterville’s nonprofit arts and cultural organizations and their audiences generate over $6 million in direct economic activity per year.
