The Festival offers a supportive atmosphere aimed at fostering a creative exchange of ideas, encouraging exploration of new ground and providing opportunities to experience a wide spectrum of dance/movement disciplines. Artists, students and audiences share their knowledge and inspiration through workshops, jams, discussions, informal showings and performances. The Bates Dance Festival is comprised of four interwoven programs: two professional training programs including the Young Dancers Workshop (YDW), a rigorous three-week program serving pre-professional dancers ages 14-18; the Professional Training Program (PTP) serving dancers ages 18 and up; a main-stage performances series featuring renowned contemporary dance artists from around the world: and community outreach activities including the Youth Arts Program serving local youth ages 6-17 with dance and music training, and the Community Dance Project that invites local residents to participate in an intensive creative collaboration with a choreographer and Festival dancers which occurs on alternate years. Commissioning and residency projects support new works by established companies, emerging choreographers and international artists. Interior Visions: Selections from the Collection by Alex Katz - Colby Museum of Art. Interior Visions, the third installation of Rediscoveries, is curated by the artist Alex Katz. The Rediscoveries exhibition series invites members of the Colby College community to select and arrange artworks from the Museum's collection. For Interior Visions, Katz has selected a group of modern and contemporary paintings and works on paper that he describes as "relevant to our times and to each other." Free and Open to the Public Tuesday Saturday 10 am 5 pm, Sunday 12-5 pm and Closed Mondays. The Museum is closed during the following holidays Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

VILES ARBORETUM JOINS FORCES WITH OLD FORT WESTERN TO OFFER EARLY AMERICAN APPRENTICE PROGRAM (MORNING) AND FIELD SCHOOL FOR YOUNG NATURALISTS (AFTERNOON). Old Fort Western, the 1754 National Historic Landmark fort, store, and house museum on the Kennebec River in downtown Augusta is happy to announce that once again this year we will be collaborating with the Viles Arboretum to offer a unique learning experience of living history and hands on nature learning all in one day! This program is for children ages 8-12 who are interested in history and nature and will only be offered twice this year during the weeks of July 9 through July 13, 2012 and August 6 through August 10, 2012 only. In the morning from 8:30 to 12:00 pm, at Old Fort Western kids will have the opportunity to apprentice in jobs such as, storekeeper, blacksmith, seamstress and more. Bring your own lunch to eat in our air-conditioned conference room and take a chaperoned bus ride over the Viles Arboretum to enjoy afternoons of interactive and creative hands-on learning within the hundreds of acres of woodlands, fields and streams and ponds located there. The day will end at 4:00 pm at Viles Arboretum. The total cost will be $125.00 per child per week. Transportation from Old Fort Western to the Viles Arboretum will be included free of charge. Pre-registration and payment in full must be received by 12:00 p.m. the Friday of the week prior to the beginning of a program session. A maximum of twelve participants may register for any given week, so space is limited. Discounts for Augusta residents and multiple children may be available. Music Festival Week of August 6th, 2012 Many of the windjammers gather midweek for the Sweet Chariot Music Festival on Swans Island where more than a dozen groups perform traditional music of the sea. Fleet also gathers on Friday night for live shipboard performances ranging from sea chanteys and blues to story-telling and folk. Raft-Up!

The Maine State Museum to Host Girl Scout Centennial Exhibit and Special Event. Girl Scouts: Celebrating One Hundred Years!! Exhibit: June 23 through August 31, 2012. The Maine State Museum in Augusta in partnership with the Girl Scouts of Maine opens a new special exhibit Girl Scouts: Celebrating One Hundred Years, on Saturday, June 23, 2012 from 11a.m. to 3 p.m. with a day filled with fun activities. On display will be vintage period uniforms, pins, patches, ephemeras, cookie merchandise, camping gear, and many other novelty items. In celebration of the new exhibit and the opening day festivities, Maine State Museum admission is free all day! On-going activities throughout the day include: the museum s Natural History and History Touch Carts Old Fashion Games Fish Printing - Scavenger Hunt. Details: Oral histories and portraits richly explore the stories of the people who helped put Auburn "on the map" as one of the largest producers of shoes in the nation at one time. These people built an industry that continues to produce world-famous shoes today. A timeline begins in the year 1824 and documents the history of shoemaking in the Twin Cities. Through photos and text learn the steps of making a shoe, welt-boot making, and about the "cottage industry" of shoemaking at home. Videos show the shoemaking process and techniques of handsewing a shoe. Cost/Cover: $5.00 adults; $4.00 seniors and students 6 and up; Free - children 5 and under accompanied by an adult.

Please be aware of the event end time. Because an inspection can take 20 to 30 minutes depending upon corrections needed and incompatibility issues between the vehicle and the car seat, the last vehicle is taken 30 minutes prior to closing. Due to the popularity of the inspection station, there may be a wait time before the inspection can begin. If there are several vehicles waiting during the last hour of operation, we may have to turn vehicles away. We will strive to accommodate your needs but your patience and understanding is appreciated!Cost/Cover: All car seat inspection stations and car seat checkup events are free.
