Submissions for Hallowell's 250th Birthday ( 1:00-3:00 PM )
The Hallowell 250th committee is planning a Community Variety show to help celebrate Hallowell's 250th Birthday. We are looking for acts, amateur and otherwise, that would include performance art including songs, skits, dances, monologues, and poetry recitation. These should be: 1) something created related to any period of time in Hallowell; or 2) a song, reading etc. from any period, that may have been familiar in Hallowell or 3) a song, skit or reading written at any time that had a theme that ties into any period. For the latter, an example may be for the time block that contains the 1936 flood, a song about that flood from anywhere in the US or even floods in general could be considered as appropriate to that theme. People can submit material for others to perform if they do not wish to perform themselves. The Variety show will be presented July 12, 13 and 14th. If you have any questions, contact Richard Bostwick at bostwick.maine@gmail.com. Proposals are due April 7th and information should be sent to Richard Bostwick at bostwick.maine@gmail.com. Auditions - Later on in April, we will audition people and their acts, as well as auditioning for people to read written material. We will also audition for people to be readers to perform the readings selected to introduce and keep the theme of the period block. People doing monologues and skits may also be asked if they would like to be reader as well. The performers don t have to be from Hallowell, but the topic should be.

Augusta Walking Tour "Museum in the Streets"
Downtown Augusta has been transformed into an outdoor museum with the installation of 31 signs in "The Museum in the Streets" Program. The signs, years in the planning and making, are written in both French and English, and tell the history of the building of Augusta, the city from 1625 to the present. All 29 signs and two large maps are within walking distance of each other on both sides of the Kennebec river. Another 9 Museum in the Streets signs have been installed along Canal Street in Mill Park. They tell the story of Edwards Mill, Edwards dam and industrial Augusta. The tour begins at City Center, proceeds behind Old Fort Western, moves down to Willow Street's W.H.Gannett's Comfort magazine printing house. On to a 10th sign at the east end of Calumet Bridge, then cross to the west side of the river, the 11th panel as at the corner of Bridge and Water Street. It's called "Seeing the Elephants" and shows a parade of elephants marching down Water Street. Proceed south on Water Street to Panel 13 that recounts the Great Augusta Bank robbery of New Year's weekend in 1850. On to the Great Augusta Fire of 1865 that destroyed 81 buildings on both sides of Water Street. Continue on and follow the tour to the end at Canal Street in Mill Park! The signs will be removed each November and replaced each spring. Maps of Augusta's Musuem in the Streets will be availalbe at Augusta City Center. Patrick Cardon, originally of France and now of Cushing, originated the idea in France.

Tourists, history buffs or those looking for something to do can now enjoy the newest version of The Museum in the Streets. City Historian and others have put together 19 signs that are part of the tour. The tour, which takes about an hour, begins at the waterfront, heads up Winthrop Street. The bulk of the signs are in the heart of downtown along Water Street. The panels (signs) reveal stories, events and traditions that helped shape the area. Hall-Dale French students were part of the translation team that made French subtitles so the panels could be bilingual. Visitors to Hallowell can find maps of the city's Museum in the Streets at City Hall, KV Chamber of Commerce or the Hubbard Free Library. Moxie is the uniquely New England soft drink, former nostrum and "nerve food". Dr. Augustin Thompson of Union, Maine, first marketed Moxie as a patent medicine in 1876 in Lowell, Massachusetts. It was guaranteed to cure multiple ills, including "loss of manhood, paralysis and softening of the brain". As a nostrum, it was dispensed a spoonful at a time. Dr. Thompson changed Moxie to take advantage of the new and growing soft drink market at the time. He put it on the soft drink market in 1884 as "Beverage Moxie Nerve Food". Later it became known simply as "Moxie". It has a core of dedicated fans in Maine. Moxie synonymous with good times and the "vigorous" life that drinking the product was supposed to sustain. Moxie was the nation's first mass-marketed soft drink.
